ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Duration: February 2022 - Present

Why We Focus on Education

In Zanzibar, around 18% of the population lives below the basic needs poverty line (2015). Overfishing and increased tourism in the last decade have put intense pressure on the marine ecosystem. Coral reefs are dying, fish populations are declining, and food security has become a critical challenge for local communities.

Our Environmental Education Program empowers children and communities to adopt sustainable practices, raise awareness about marine and coastal life, and inspire a new generation to protect their natural environment.

Educating the Next Generation

Children are the future, and fostering environmental knowledge early can lead to lasting change. Our program is implemented in schools across Matemwe, Mbuyu Tende, and Kigomani—villages in northeast Zanzibar.

Through weekly classes of one hour, we teach groups of 30 students about key topics including oceans, plastic pollution and recycling, endangered sea turtles, mangroves, fish ecology and sustainable fishing practices, coral health, and beach clean-ups. Each topic includes a practical field trip, giving students hands-on experience in the marine environment.

Experiential Learning and Teacher Training

Field trips allow students to see marine life and ecosystems in action, connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences. We also provide training for teachers to strengthen their knowledge of marine conservation and ecological processes, so they can continue teaching effectively beyond our program.

Program Impact

The program runs throughout the school year alongside regular lessons. Students share what they learn at home and within their communities. In 2026, we teach 120 students across 3 schools and 4 classes, and some children are even inspired to pursue careers as marine biologists.

We are proud to share that 7 students who have participated in our Environmental Education Program have been selected to continue their secondary education at a private school, funded by the Kym Rapier Foundation. These private schools provide a higher quality education than the often overcrowded government schools, offering smaller classes, more individual attention, and better resources. This opportunity allows the students to reach their full potential and positions them to become future leaders in their communities and advocates for marine conservation.

Get Involved

You can make a difference in the future of Zanzibar’s children, communities, and marine environment. Donations to the Environmental Education Program directly support our classes, field trips, and teacher training initiatives.
