Coral Conservation Project

Why Coral Reefs Matter

Coral reefs are often called the “rainforests of the sea,” and for good reason. They provide shelter, food, and breeding grounds for an incredible variety of marine life—about 25% of all ocean fish rely on healthy reefs. Coral polyps—the tiny animals that build reefs—come in many forms, from massive reef-building colonies to delicate, flowing fans.

Sadly, coral reefs are under serious threat. Pollution, sedimentation, and unsustainable fishing practices take a heavy toll, while natural pressures like storms and disease add to the challenge. Rising ocean temperatures caused by climate change make the need for reef restoration more urgent than ever.

Restoring Zanzibar’s Coral Reefs

In collaboration with LindaBahari, we run a coral nursery and an artificial reef at Mnemba. In the nursery, corals are grown on ropes and tables, giving them a safe environment to thrive. The corals are healthy and growing well, and we clean the nursery every week to keep conditions optimal.

Our artificial reef, established in April 2025, is made up of structures shaped like starfish, turtles, and reef stars, placed in areas that were once just rubble. Corals from the nursery are carefully transplanted onto these structures, and we visit the reef every week to monitor growth and survival. Over time, this work helps rebuild a vibrant, living reef, providing habitat for marine life and strengthening the health of the surrounding ocean.

Educating the Next Generation

Through our Environmental Education Program, we teach students at local schools about corals, reefs, and the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. By raising awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility, we encourage local communities to take part in reef restoration. This ensures that future generations are equipped to protect and restore Zanzibar’s marine environment.
