PROJECT OVERVIEW

LIVELIHOOD FISHERMAN

Duration: April 2024 - April 2027

About the project

Initiated in July 2023, the Livelihood Fisherman Project addresses the challenges faced by the fishing community in Matemwe, Zanzibar. Confronted with declining fish stocks due to overfishing and the establishment of marine protected areas where a no fishing zone is applied, the community seeks alternative livelihood options. Throughout conducted surveys in the fisherman community, an innovative and sustainable solution emerged: sea cucumber (Sandfish Holothuria Scabra) farming!

Livelihood Fisherman

Collaboration with the Matemwe Community:

NGO Under The Wave, in collaboration with the Matemwe community, will establish three sea cucumber farms throughout this project. They will set up the farms together with the community, providing training on marine pest control, maintenance, security, and financial management of the sea cucumber farms. During the project, the involvement of NGO Under The Wave will decrease, with the goal of community ownership after three years.

Project Duration:

Commencing in April 2024, the first farm will be established, followed by the setup of the second and third farms in September 2024 and January 2025, respectively. This phased approach ensures year-round harvesting opportunities for the community.

Community Empowerment:

We will progressively reduce its involvement each year, facilitating the community’s understanding and ownership of the sea cucumber farms. By the project’s conclusion in April 2027, the community will fully manage and operate the farms independently.

Conclusion

The Livelihood Fisherman project represents a sustainable transition for the Matemwe community, empowering them to manage and benefit from sea cucumber farming independently. Through collaboration, education, and progressive handover, this project aims to create lasting positive impacts on livelihoods, the environment, and community well-being.
