er een aanzienlijke afname geweest in de wereldwijde populaties van zeeschildpadden. Menselijke activiteiten, zoals toerisme, hebben geleid tot de degradatie van neststranden. Bovendien heeft de jacht op zeeschildpadden voor hun vlees, eieren en medicinale doeleinden, samen met de onbedoelde vangst van grote zeeschildpadden als bijvangst bij overbevissing, ertoe geleid dat de meerderheid van de zeeschildpadden als kwetsbaar of bedreigd wordt geclassificeerd. Daarom is het verkrijgen van meer informatie over de populatie van cruciaal belang.<\/p>\n<p>Eerdere studies vertrouwden op standaard \u2018vangst-merk-terugzet\u2019 methoden op basis van merktekens als een instrument om de populatiegrootte vast te stellen. Ons project maakt gebruik van de foto-identificatietechniek. Deze techniek, steeds vaker gebruikt als een betrouwbaar middel om individuen in de loop der tijd te volgen, heeft veel voordelen ten opzichte van merken. Conventionele merkmethoden zijn kostbaar en veroorzaken stress bij de dieren. De merktekens zijn moeilijk aan te brengen en vallen gemakkelijk af. Door foto\u2019s van de wangen van de schildpadden aan een database toe te voegen, identificeren we individuele zeeschildpadden in een populatie en volgen we ze in de loop der tijd. De eerste stap is het verzamelen van zoveel mogelijk foto\u2019s. Vervolgens transformeren we de foto\u2019s visueel tot een unieke foto-ID-code voor elke schildpad. Met een uitgebreide database kunnen we uiteindelijk de populatiegrootte en -structuur schatten en betrouwbare informatie verzamelen over hun verspreiding, habitatgebruik en migratiepatronen.
